Toilet repair and installation
A running toilet wastes 200+ litres a day and shows up on your bill long before you notice the sound. Here's what we see most and what it costs.
Common problems
Running constantly — usually a worn flapper or a fill valve out of adjustment. Cheap and quick. Weak or incomplete flush — mineral buildup in the rim jets, a partial blockage, or a flapper closing early. Water on the floor — a failed wax ring, loose closet bolts, or a cracked tank. The wax ring is the common one and it needs doing properly or it recurs. Rocking or wobbling — usually the flange, sometimes a rotted subfloor underneath. We check before we shim. Blocked and won't clear — if a plunger hasn't done it, stop. Repeated plunging on a fully blocked line can crack the bowl.
Replacement
Worth replacing rather than repairing if the tank is cracked, the bowl is leaking at the base repeatedly, or it's a pre-1994 high-volume unit — modern 4.8L units use a fraction of the water and pay for themselves.
