Why the permit matters
Gas work in BC requires a licensed gas fitter and, in almost all cases, a permit and an inspection. That isn't bureaucracy for its own sake.
The inspection checks venting. Venting is a carbon monoxide question. Unpermitted gas work is also an insurance problem — a claim following an incident on unpermitted work is a conversation nobody wants to have — and it surfaces at resale.
If a quote is dramatically cheaper than the others, ask two questions: is the permit included, and is the person doing the work licensed? Ask for the number.
Every home with gas should have a working CO alarm
If it sounds, leave the building and call 911 from outside. Don't investigate. A cracked heat exchanger is the usual cause and the appliance must not be run again until it's inspected.

What should I do if I smell gas?
Do not touch any switch or anything that could spark. Leave the building. Call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 from outside, then call us.
Do I need a licensed gas fitter?
Yes. Any gas work in BC requires a licensed gas fitter, and doing it otherwise affects your insurance and your safety.
Do I need a permit for gas work?
Yes for most gas work, including new lines and appliance connections. We pull it and it is in the quote.
Can you run a gas line to my BBQ or fire table?
Yes. An outdoor gas line means no more propane tanks, and the cost depends mainly on the distance from your existing supply.
Can you connect my new gas range?
Yes, by a licensed gas fitter. If there is no gas line at that location we will price running one.
How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?
Annually, before the heating season. It covers the burner, venting, glass seal and combustion safety.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?
Every home with gas appliances should have a working one. If it sounds, leave the building and call 911 from outside rather than investigating.
Can I install a gas appliance myself?
No. Gas work requires a licensed gas fitter in BC, and unpermitted gas work is a safety and insurance problem.
What does a gas safety inspection cover?
Appliance operation and combustion, venting integrity, gas pressure, leak testing on connections, and the condition of shut-offs and regulators.
Can you move my gas meter?
Meter relocation involves FortisBC as well as us. We handle the plumbing and gas fitting side and coordinate the utility work.
Is gas cheaper than electricity for heating in BC?
At current rates gas is generally cheaper per unit of heat than standard electric resistance heating, but a heat pump changes that comparison considerably. We will run the numbers for your actual usage.
Do you do commercial gas work?
Yes, including cooking equipment connections for restaurants and commercial heating appliances.
