Heat pump water heaters
A heat pump water heater — sometimes called a hybrid — moves heat from the surrounding air into the water rather than generating it electrically. It uses roughly a third of the energy of a standard electric tank.
Installed cost is $3,500–$6,000 before any rebates. It isn't right for every space, and the space is what decides it.
Where it works, and where it doesn't
The unit needs air to draw heat from, and it cools and dehumidifies that air as a by-product.

Poor locations: a small sealed closet with no airflow · an unheated crawlspace or exposed garage that drops near freezing · a living space where the noise would bother you · anywhere the cooling effect would work against your heating
Most units run in hybrid mode, falling back to conventional electric elements when demand outpaces the heat pump — so you're not left short in a cold snap.
Running cost
Compared with standard electric, most households see a substantial reduction. Against gas, it depends on the relationship between BC electricity and gas rates, which moves. We'll do the comparison for your actual usage rather than quoting a generic figure.
⚠️ It's slower to recover than gas. In a household with heavy simultaneous demand, size up.
Heat pump water heaters may qualify for provincial and utility rebates. Programs, amounts and eligibility change, and some require the work to be done by a contractor registered with the Home Performance Contractor Network at the time of quoting.
